Robocall Epidemic
In 2024, the United States received an estimated 52.8 billion robocalls, according to YouMail, a company that tracks robocall trends.
This epimemic of robocalls amounts to robocall harassment.
Frankly, nobody wants to receive these annoying calls. Often people receive 30 to 40 robocalls each day..
And, when you retire, you can expect tons of calls from people promoting the Medical Alert System, various Medicare Advantage plans, home security promoters, funeral expense plans, and on and on it goes.
Bu, why so many robocalls?
The answer is simple.
- First, salespeople make commissions when they make a sale.
- Second, robocall services are relatively inexpensive.
- And, third, robocalls sift people and retain only those that show an interest in the product being promoted, saving salespeople a lot of time.
In other words, it’s very profitable to make robocalls.
How Can I Stop Robocalls on My Landline Phone?
Federal regulations require robocallers to get written consent for telemarketing calls, honor the National Do Not Call Registry, and provide truthful caller ID information.
But, I think we all know how well robocallers adhere to these regulations. Which is not at all.
In 2024, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) received 1.1 million complaints about robocalls, a decrease from 1.2 million in 2023 and 1.8 million in 2022.
In addition, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) receives around 200,000 complaints about robocalls each year, making it their top consumer complaint category.
People are begining to realize that they cannot depend on the government in Washington D.C. to help regulate this industry. So, it’s up to you and me to do something.
Robocall Blocker
I bought what I thought was a home phone robocall blocker. I had high hopes for it.
When you receive a robocall you would press the red button and it would remember the phone number and block that number from ringing your phone in the future.
Well, it worked exactly at it was supposed to work.
But, the robocallers worked smarter.
The robocaller software seemed to choose random phone numbers to use as their Caller ID. So, each time they called they appeared to call from a different phone number. Mostly they chose phone numbers from the same area code they were making calls to.
